stereocilia

aluminium, rimu, brass, solenoids

stereocilia is informed and inspired by the perceptual apparatus of the human hearing sense. the work reimagines what other forms these sensing systems can take, and imprints the materiality and physicality of the marina one space onto its form. with mechatronic actuators that fire like the neural pathways of the inner ear, the work seeks to invert the causality of the aural sensing system. In the human ear, hair cells turn the fluid pressure and other mechanical stimuli into electric stimuli. Stereocilia inverts this with electrical stimuli being converted into mechanical movement, which then produces sound as organic matter is struck.

stereocilia was first exhibited in singapore at marina one with ensemble mechatronic
